Royal college chief appointed as new chair of GMC

The current chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has been appointed as the new chair of the GMC.

Professor Terence Stephenson, who specialises in paediatric medicine and emergencies, was appointed by an independent panel to take over from Professor Sir Peter Rubin as chair of the regulator in January next year.

Professor Stephenson is currently Nuffield professor of child health at the Institute of Child Health at University College London, and is honorary consultant paediatrician at UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust & Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust.

He said: ‘I am committed to working with doctors, patients, employers and educators to build on the achievements of the GMC over recent years and to make sure we continue to use our expertise and leadership to help ensure safe, high quality care for patients and high standards of professionalism.’

The GMC received 37 applications for the position. The recruitment panel was impressed by Stephenson’s wealth of experience from his previous roles, the regulator said.

Professor Rubin said the appointment ‘will benefit the GMC in our work to protect patients by maintaining and improving standards in medical practice’.

I've met Prof Terence Stephenson. He is a good guy. He gave a moving speech at a BAPIO conference about having personally experienced discrimination growing up in Northern Ireland and hoped to help fight discrimination in the NHS. Glad to see him as the new chair of the GMC.
