The Cancer Survivor’s Companion: Practical ways to cope with your feelings after cancer by Dr Frances Goodhart and Lucy Atkins

This book is written by a well known health journalist and consultant in clinical psychology. It focuses on how a cancer survivor may deal with their feelings post-diagnosis and treatment. The authors helpfully discuss how to tackle the emotional aspects of cancer such as anxiety, body image, fatigue, anger and depression using achievable strategies. It is an easy to read, sympathetic book that manages not to use jargon.

It is a realistic practical guide that would also be of help to other patients affected by a long term illness. It does not discuss financial aspects, ongoing treatments, insurance and other important considerations which may be relevant post-diagnosis; however, it is a useful emotional guide both for patients and their relatives that I would recommend. It would be helpful to health care professionals who look after those with long-term conditions including cancer both to recommend and read this book.
