Starting with Anoro as initial maintenance therapy in symptomatic COPD patients
What is Anoro?
Anoro Ellipta is a LAMA/LABA, that contains umeclidinium and vilanterol, two molecules specifically selected for their long duration of action, enabling once-daily dosing1-8. Anoro is indicated as a maintenance bronchodilator treatment to relieve symptoms in adult patients with COPD1.
Anoro improved COPD patients’ lung function (trough FEV1) even more than tiotropium HandiHaler2,9
In a post-hoc, pooled analysis of 3 RCTs at 24 weeks in patients not on maintenance therapy (for ≥ 30 days before screening),2,9 Anoro demonstrated a 2.4x greater lung function improvement vs tiotropium HandiHaler with an extra 146mL improvement in trough FEV1.*2,9
Anoro was also well tolerated and demonstrated a safety profile comparable to tiotropium HandiHaler.2
Based on a pooled, post hoc subgroup analysis of patients not on maintenance therapy for ≥ 30 days before screening from three 24-week randomised, active-controlled, multicentre, parallel-group studies. Primary endpoint: trough FEV1 on Day 169.

In an 8-week open-label crossover study in patients not on maintenance therapy (for ≥ 2 weeks prior to randomisation), Anoro demonstrated a 1.4X superior lung function improvement vs. Spiolto Respimat with an extra 52mL improvement in trough FEV1.10
Anoro also reduced rescue medication use by an extra 38% compared with Spiolto Respimat (Difference: 0.25 puffs/day).10
Anoro was well tolerated and demonstrated a safety profile comparable to Spiolto Respimat.10
An 8-week, randomised, open-label, two-period crossover study in symptomatic patients with moderate COPD (post-bronchodilator FEV1 ≤ 70% and ≥50% of predicted value and mMRC score of ≥ 2) and who were not on maintenance therapy for ≥ 2 weeks prior to randomisation or using inhaled ICS ≥ 30 days before screening.

Anoro also comes in the easy to use Ellipta inhaler. Significantly fewer COPD patients using the Ellipta inhaler made critical errors compared with other commonly used inhalers (Accuhaler, MDI, Turbohaler, HandiHaler, Breezhaler), after reading the patient information leaflet. In a multi-centre, single visit, randomised, cross-over, open-label study to investigate errors in the use of different inhalers in patients with COPD, has shown.13
A critical error is defined as inhaler usage likely to result in no, or minimal, medication being inhaled. The key results included13:
5.5x fewer patients made critical errors with Ellipta compared to Turbohaler (8% vs 44%, N=100, p<0.001)
4.8x fewer patients made critical errors with Ellipta compared to MDI (13% vs 60%, N=80, p<0.001)
3.4x fewer patients made critical errors with Ellipta compared to Handihaler (14% vs 48%, N=118, p<0.001)
