The RCGP has admitted an error in its much-vaunted toolkit for antimicrobial stewardship, after a practice pointed out a mistake in the recommended dose of an antibiotic.
The mistake related to the dosing regimen advised for pivmecillinam in patients with known or suspected renal impairment, under the module on management of urinary tract infections (UTIs).
The original advice stated that a dose of 400mg should be given three times daily for the full course.
However, the RCGP has now clarified this should be 400mg immediately then 200mg three times daily for 3 or 7 days – in line with Public Health England advice – after the practice queried it.
The College said the mistake has now been rectified on the online module.
