GMC defers revalidation for GPs to 'free up vital time' for coronavirus

The GMC has announced that it will defer revalidation for GPs to ‘free up vital time’ on the coronavirus ‘frontline’.

All revalidation dates scheduled from now until the end of September will be deferred for a year while doctors respond to the Covid-19 outbreak, the regulator said.

Regarding appraisals, the GMC said these were part of local clinical governance meaning responsible officers are at liberty to decide whether to pause or cancel them.

GMC chief Charlie Massey said: We’re doing everything in our power to support doctors and employers on the frontline, where patients need them most.

'To free up vital time, revalidation dates between 17 March and the end of September will be deferred a year.

‘We hope this will help ease the burden on doctors already working so hard to deliver the best possible care’.

Last week, the GMC confirmed that retired doctors who might come back to the workforce to help deal with the coronavirus crisis will not have to revalidate.

So all those GPs who took early retirement (when they were at their peak) because they didn’t want the hassle of annual appraisal can now return (having been out of practice for years) with no revalidation.

Will the penny finally drop at the RCGP? Appraisal is now proved to be the useless colossal waste of precious time we’ve been been telling you for years. Let something positive emerge from the Corona Crisis, scrap appraisal forever!

  • All appraisals postponed until sept 2020. So to allow us to do our job: cqc stops, appraisals stop, patients told to think twice, and patients told to stay at home with a cold. Unbelievable. Who would have known.

  • Why keeping this not fit fir purpose process of appraisal and revalidation. Complete waste of valuable time that better spent on treating patients.
It didn’t advance the medical profession or improved patients care.
It only served to force experienced doctors to leave the medical profession.
Now we are in crisis of doctors shortage after over 35000 doctors left. This Revalidation process has vandalised the medical profession. Please GMC and Dept of Health just abolish it.

  • @10:15 - spot on. Let’s hope these changes endure and become “re-frozen” into the new modus operandi.
@10:57 - what is the net benefit from CQC and A&R? What is the NNH?

  • My concern is the boffins at the GMC will look at the evidence and see in the period revalidation was suspended that mortality rates increased, life expectancy dropped and will conclude we need much more stringent appraisals & yearly revalidation?

Like the way you tell them but shudder at the possible outcome.

  • I don't understand . I revalidate in June. my 5 yr appraisal cycle was signed off in november, so why cant you issue my licence and then I can plan my exit . By all means delay my next appraisal for as long as you like, just give me my licence. I have expertly ticked boxes and hoop jumped for the last 5 yrs . I have earned it !

  • This is the time to cut all this crap! Don’t restart all of this after Covid19 , just stop it for good and let everybody get on with their jobs.
