Dispensing Doctors’ Association

The Dispensing Doctors' Association represents the interests of GPs who dispense medications for patients. It was founded in1984 when GP Dr David Roberts, invited GPs to a meeting to discuss the threat to dispensing services caused by introduction of a ‘limited list' of drugs GPs could prescribe.

The association provides advice to members and information for outside agencies on dispensing issues. It holds regular meetings with the GPC, Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee www.psnc.org.uk, the Department of Health and other agencies regarding service issues, including remuneration and reimbursement. The association also publishes a quarterly journal and holds an annual conference.

In 2010 there were 1,129 dispensing practices in England, 5,778 dispensing doctors and 8,240,760 patients received medical services from a dispensing doctor.
