The revised Med 3 has been causing problems for GPs. Dr Debbie Cohen advises on how to get it right.

Learning objectives


This module will provide an overview of the revised Med 3, covering:

  • Signing patients off work for longer than three months
  • Backdating a patient's fit note
  • Managing patients who you think will not be able to return to work
  • Advising employers who request a ‘fitness for work' certificate
  • Issuing a fit note based on your assessment of written information from a registered healthcare professional
  • Managing patients who request sick leave due to bereavement

This module was first published on 14th April 2011 and was up to date with all key guidelines and evidence at that point. It will be reviewed as part of our routine update cycle by 14th April 2013 but will be updated sooner to reflect any key guideline changes.
