When the RCGP announced its plans to increase trainee membership fees by nearly £600 last June, chair of the BMA GP trainees’ subcommittee Dr Donna Tooth did not mince her words.

She claimed the rise was ‘unjustifiable’, that the RCGP had repeatedly failed to send her any calculations of what the price hike was for. She also threw shade on the Government’s ‘new deal’ for GPs, saying that the pledge to offer trainees an additional year of training in another clinical specialty was ‘disappointing’.

She added: ‘We are the shortest specialty training of all, and we already have a limited amount of time in general practice. So if it is what it’s suggesting, I would be disappointed that there’s not an extension of time in general practice to learn our own specialty adequately.’

Dr Tooth says being elected chair of the subcommittee was her highlight of the year: ‘It marked the beginning of the rewarding and challenging journey.’ She is currently a GPST2 in Essex.
