Although one of the youngest GPs on the list, Dr Ahmed Rashid is already making waves in the media and academia.

Mentored by Imperial College London researcher Professor Azeem Majeed and supervised by Professor Jonathan Mant at the University of Cambridge, Dr Rashid says his highlight for the year was being the one GP selected for the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme, a leadership scheme for junior doctors.

He’s also an NIHR academic clinical fellow in general practice at the University of Cambridge). His writing has also won accolades from leading medical magazines. His essay about sensitively treating a senior Cambridge academic won one of the Pulse writing awards this year. Dr Rashid pens a regular column for the BJGP, he blogs for the BMJ and had an article featured in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. Last June, Pulse also published a powerful article by him about the direction of travel needed for medical education if the GP workforce crisis is to be resolved.

The strongest nomination for this rising star read: ‘Dr Rashid has contributed vastly to the debate on how to resolve the workforce crisis in general practice, and writes an informative and unique column in the BJGP. His penmanship is first class and I feel he is potentially a future leader in general practice.’ An ST4 at the time of going to press, Dr Rashid expects to qualify as a GP this year and says he hopes to continue in a career that blends clinical care, research, teaching and writing.
