As locality lead for her CCG, GP Dr Katie Pieroni from Oldham, Greater Manchester, was nominated for providing leadership that is ‘brave, bold and innovative’.

Her supporters claimed she had singlehandedly pulled together a cluster of practices, introduced innovative models at the CCG and secured budgets for them. Other supporters praised her for introducing three projects to tackle health inequalities in her area, which have already started to improve outcomes for patients.

‘Working in an area with significant socio-economic deprivation and unmet healthcare need,’ she told Pulse, ‘I am convinced collaborative working is the only way forward if we want to facilitate health behaviour change and reduce premature mortality.

‘Integrated care is often talked about as the way forward. But it’s down to GPs to find out how to make integrated care a reality.’
