As chief executive of Manchester LMC, Dr Vell has set an example of how to represent GPs at a time of great change.

This has seen some previously national powers and funding handed to CCGs and local authorities in Greater Manchester under a devolution agreement, and has been used to stimulate closer cooperation between primary, secondary and community healthcare providers.

With Sustainability and Transformation Plans around the country upending care, she has been a groundbreaker when it comes to securing input from grassroots GP representatives into the plans’ development.

This got off to a tough start, with the LMC excluded from the planning process, Dr Vell says she has now secured the involvement in the process not just of GPs but also pharmacists, optometrists and dentists.

As well as her LMC role, she now holds the title of associate lead for primary and community care in the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership and technical advisory committee for NHS Englands, and the NAPC’s, new care models programmes.

Dr Vell says one of her proudest achievements over the past year is establishing the new Manchester local care organisation, which will be contracted to deliver all non-acute healthcare to 600,000 patients under a 10-year contract worth £6bn.
