Pulse’s top Rising Star last year, this Leicestershire GP is now leading NHS England’s project to attract 2,000 more GPs from overseas.

As the chair of NHS England’s project board for international GP recruitment in the Midlands, Dr Anwar has recruited and placed 30 doctors at practices in Lincolnshire. He has also set up and overseen a training campus in Poland, where GPs went through a 12-week intensive programme. That scheme attracted 250 expressions of interest.

He is now working to help other areas recruit international doctors. Considering the scheme’s target has quadrupled since NHS England announced 500 overseas GPs in the GP Forward View in April 2016, this project will benefit greatly from his experience.

This is the latest line in an already impressive CV for Dr Anwar who is associate medical director of NHS England – Central Midlands (which, he points out, covers a patch geographically larger than Belgium), diabetes lead in his region, a fellow of the RCGP, and ‘academic champion’ at the University of Leicestershire.

As one GP put it, he is a ‘However, Dr Anwar’s perception of himself is slightly different: he is ‘hard working and hard work!’, he says.
