Thrust into the spotlight by the announcement of Manchester devolution, Greater Manchester LMCs chair Dr Vell adjusted to this new reality and got on with the job.
She ensured that those in charge were persuaded (and perhaps cajoled) to produce plans that worked for local GPs, and Manchester is leading the country with its plans to put more care into GP practices and integrate with social care.
The MCP contract has been refined in the city, building in indemnity protection and 15-year terms – something now adopted nationally. Other areas are following Manchester – particularly as NHS England chief Simon Stevens has taken a close interest – so Dr Vell’s influence is spreading far and wide.
She says: ‘I have worked hard to ensure maximum flexibility for colleagues and solutions to national problems.’
This year will see Dr Vell’s work in six different areas come to fruition, with ‘flexibility for workforce and job satisfaction whilst caring effectively for communities in radical new ways’. We can only hope that her influence continues.
