Dr Zoe Norris has paved an important path for the rights of locum GPs in her role as a member of the BMA’s sessional GP Committee.
The Yorkshire portfolio GP has this year helped to produce model terms and conditions for locums.
She was also part of the BMA team that launched a legal challenge to guarantee death-in-service benefits for locum GPs.
But her most high-profile intervention in general practice this year was raising wider concerns with colleagues about sexism within senior levels of the BMA, prompting an investigation.
This coincided with her announcing she would be stepping down, underlining the severity of the problems she is challenging.
She says ‘I’m proud to have been in a position to put my head above the parapet over unacceptable behaviour in the BMA. This was extremely hard to do and has opened myself and others up to criticism. But it needed to be done to make the BMA acknowledge there was a problem and accept the status quo couldn’t continue’.
‘I don’t know what the independent inquiry into this will say, but if it has helped one individual come forward and feel able to stand up against bullying and sexist behaviour, then I’m proud of that,’ she adds.
