This year has seen Professor Hawthorne champion GP training.

Nominated for ‘making general practice more prominent on the undergraduate curriculum’, the Cardiff GP is now director of medical education at the University of Surrey and RCGP vice-chair.

And the Cardiff GP who also recently became RCGP vice chair, does not think small when it comes to her aims over the next year with ‘winning a bid to set up a new medical school’ at the university, at the top of her agenda.

But if her previous experience is anything to go by, the Cardiff GP will take it in her stride. She has been teaching medical students for more than 20 years as Professor of Medical Education at Cardiff University – a role she left this year – and in her practice. She was also an MRCGP examiner for a similar time.

Why influential: Could soon be head of the UK’s newest medical school

Surprising fact: Featured on Bobinogs, a Welsh version of Teletubbies
