Dr Morris Gallagher

Throughout his career, Dr Gallagher has proved an inspiring GP. He has improved outcomes for people with substance misuse problems through research, delivering peer training on management and prescribing, developing a detox and abstinence prescribing framework, and leading co-produced focus groups.

More recently, Dr Gallagher has worked on quality improvement initiatives for asthma and COPD, and pain management in primary care, the latter entailing modelling group consultations for patients with chronic pain with two nearby practices.

Despite nearing retirement, Dr Gallagher retains his numerous and varied roles at his busy practice, while also volunteering and participating at a 12-step Christian recovery programme, supporting a local food bank, running charity events, and studying part time for a photography degree.

Dr Gallagher established a mentor programme for GPs at his surgery and his team-focused philosophy extends beyond the working environment, with numerous team awaydays and social events, including the practice’s annual Bake-Off competition.

What colleagues say: ‘I started work at the surgery 15 years ago and have been inspired and motivated by Morris, not only in general practice but also in life outside of the practice’ Dr Vicki Local, GP, Central Surgery, South Shields
