Women’s health advocate Dr Rushton has managed to reduce teenage pregnancy in her area of Blackburn ‘through teamworking, knowing the patients and being their advocate’, according to those who nominated her.

Dr Rushton herself is much more modest, telling Pulse that her nurse colleague has done as much of the work. Nevertheless, she is the one who runs a weekly women’s health clinic, which helps women in her region with all their health needs. Run as a LES, the successful clinic has short waiting times (less than two weeks) and it offers all methods of contraception.

Dr  Rushton, Family Doctor Association vice-chair and a cathedral chorister, says what she enjoys most about the job is ‘continuity of care and long-term friendships in the practice’. A true family doctor.

What others say about her ‘Significantly reduced teenage pregnancy rates in her area through teamworking, knowing the patients and being their advocate.’
