Newly elected to the GPC’s sessional GPs subcommittee, Dr Shukla has made indemnity her cause, gathering evidence for the problem by doing a survey of 395 out-of-hours GPs, which showed that 25% stopped providing urgent care sessions because of rising indemnity costs.

These rises have hit her on a personal level and she wrote to Pulse explaining how they made her stop out-of-hours work: ‘It was not financially viable. For me, as a single mum, it meant a few treats for my son had to go. In a wider view, the NHS lost a willing GP to indemnity, adding to the OOH crisis.’

Dr Shukla believes solving the indemnity issue is a key in the workforce crisis and hopes to build on this work next year. She plans to ‘campaign relentlessly and apply pressure on NHS England to work towards a tangible solution’.

She has also had an impact locally, with one nominator describing her as ‘a great binding factor in our local community of GPs’. Dr Shukla is an executive member of NHS Blackburn with Darwen CCG and a member of Lancashire and Cumbria LMC. She created a north-west sessional GP group, and, after the problems experienced with last year’s flu campaign, took on the role of LMC rep for the flu campaign in Pennine, Lancashire.

What others say about her ‘She tirelessly campaigns against indemnity charge hikes’.
