At the heart of general practice since 1960

Praised for ‘defending general practice vigorously’ and for ‘being a conscientious, honest doctor who pulls no punches,’ Dr Ahmad doesn’t let anything hold her back.

She has broken down barriers throughout her medical career, not least  as the first BME female regional representative on the GPC, to which she was elected two years ago. She was also recently elected to the GPC’s only seat on the agenda committee for the 2017 LMCs Conference.

Dr Ahmad, who is medical secretary of Walsall LMC and vice-chair of West Midlands LMC, has also facilitated meetings between practices and the CQC and leads negotiations on GP local enhanced services. She introduced a funding formula tool ‘to ensure that GPs are appropriately paid for every activity’.

All this from a GP who as an international medical graduate was once told by an A&E consultant that her place was ‘to sit at home’ and that she did not ‘deserve’ to be working there. Fortunately this motivated her to work even harder. ‘I took it as a challenge and proved that IMGs can rise to any challenges, and they make an integral part of the NHS workforce,’ she says.

What to watch next year: As a member of the GPC education and training workforce subcommittee she says she wants to concentrate on the recruitment crisis, in particular on influencing the female workforce ‘to come to the front line and save general practice’.
