A high-profile GP leader and former Labour Government advisor has offered his support for the Conservatives' primary care policy.
Former BMA deputy chair Dr Sam Everington, an award-winning GP in Bromley by Bow, east London, said he felt the Conservatives had ‘strong policies' to offer GPs and primary care.
Dr Everington served as an advisor to several members of the shadow Labour health team between 1991 and 1997 and has also been a vocal campaigner on issues such as racial discrimination in medical schools and health inequalities.
During his speech to the Conservative party spring conference in Brighton last month, shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley introduced Dr Everington as his ‘special guest' and invited him to meet several members of the shadow health team.
Dr Everington told Pulse: ‘I was invited by Andrew Lansley who has seen what we have done here in Bromley by Bow and is a fan, because it chimes very much with what he feels is health policy.'
‘We talk to anybody and it's my responsibility to go out and be an ambassador to anybody who will listen. But what is very strong in Conservative party policy is their focus on poverty and public health.'
