Letter of the week: Health bill is the bigger threat to GP pensions

When is the profession going to wake up to the fact that the Health and Social Care Bill represents a much bigger threat to NHS pensions than the Hutton report?

News: Pensions and GP role to top LMCs' agenda

From 2014, all new employees to the NHS will not be routinely entitled to national terms and conditions, which include NHS pensions. Existing staff will be protected by TUPE legislation.

However, since the NHS pension pot is provided by current employees, the fact that new employees won't be contributing will clearly have an effect on everyone else in the scheme.

The Health and Social Care Bill is clearly designed to increasingly replace the public provision of healthcare with private provision.

A small number of individuals will become very wealthy as a result, but the majority of NHS staff will see an attack on their salaries and pensions.

The Health and Social Care Bill is by far the biggest threat to the NHS and the working lives of doctors.

Despite this fact, we still have a minority of doctors (15-20%) who think it is a good thing. The mind boggles.
