GP cycles 1,000 miles to raise money for cancer nurses

A GP has raised almost £4,000 for community cancer nurses by cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Dr Stephen Wilde, from Yorkshire, completed the 1,008 miles in often fierce wind to provide funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

He said: ‘I was overwhelmed with the support. Over 100 people have donated, mostly patients of the practice. Everywhere I went people responded very positively when they found out which charity I was doing it for. My family were incredibly supportive – I couldn’t have done it without them.’

Dr Wilde left John O’Groats on July 16 and finished in Land’s End on July 29.

Marie Cure Cancer Care area fundraising manager Cheryl Barrett said: ‘We are full of admiration for the incredible challenge he has completed and feel honoured that he has chosen to support the work of our local nurses.’
