Capita ordered to urgently investigate missing GP training payments

NHS England has ordered its primary care support provider Capita to urgently investigate missing training payments to GP practices.

GPC warned yesterday that practices across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Humberside, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the North East had not received their due payments since Capita took on the responsibility from NHS England regional teams.

Practices are resonsible for paying GP registrars but Primary Care Support England (Capita) is responsible for reimbursing the cost of this, and the GPC said the problems with recovering the cost was having a serious impact on practices whose budgets are already squeezed.

An NHS England spokesperson said: ‘We have been alerted to this issue and have asked Capita to undertake an urgent investigation to urgently prioritise remedial action, and to determine root causes so it doesn’t happen again.

‘We have also asked Capita to write to practices to explain the process that should be followed to claim reimbursement of the training grant and trainees salaries to ensure reimbursement is not delayed.’

How do training payments work?

  • Where a GP practice employs a GP trainee and pays the trainees salary they seek reimbursement of the salary and associated costs (if the trainee is not paid by a lead employer) additionally a training grant is payable to the practice for undertaking the training.
  • The training grant where due to be paid to the practice is paid through Primary Care Support England, provided by Capita if not paid via alternative arrangements (i.e. Lead employer arrangements)
