New GPs will have 75% of RCGP fees paid under indemnity deal

A medical defence organisation has arranged an indemnity deal with the RCGP that will see newly qualified GPs have three-quarters of their college fees paid.

The MDDUS claims that GPs could save over £3,000 for each GP through the new deal.

The RCGP and the MDDUS say that rising indemnity costs have led to them agreeing this deal.

RCGP chair Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard said: ‘Rising indemnity costs are a concern for all GPs, and in our manifesto on the run up to the General Election in June, the College is calling for this to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

‘I’m delighted that our newly qualified members can opt to benefit immediately from this discount scheme.’

MDDUS director of development David Sturgeon said: ‘Joining both bodies through this scheme provides a new lower-cost route for a new GP to get all the benefits of belonging to two innovative and complementary professional bodies.’

Mr Sturgeon said that members would have ‘access to expert medico-legal advice from our team of highly skilled advisers and lawyers’ as part of the scheme.

Last year Pulse revealed that one in four out-of-hours GPs stopped doing shifts due to indemnity costs.

Indemnity providers stress that higher indemnity costs are linked to steep rises in legal claims against GPs.

  • I have saved 100% of my RCGP subscription costs for each of the last eight years. All it cost me was a stamp.

Amazing how many people you ask think that funding the vast ivory tower on the Euston Rd is somehow compulsory. Save your money folks. I'll rejoin when they talk sense.

  • I didn't even waste the money on a stamp. Just cancelled my direct debit online and they came asking me to join them again. I had to laugh. Enjoying spending the money on useful things in life. Save your stamp. Also a lot of money if you have any sense. Ask what does £500+ a year membership give me, then is it really worth it. then log onto internet banking and cancel direct debit. simples.

  • RCGP is a clever organisation and knows how to make money .
The other royal colleges should learn from RCGP.

  • Another hoax floated by the RCGP - so when do new GPs cease to be 'New' for entitlement purposes and start getting fingered by the Indemnity Providers? If they save £3000 !! then what is the rate for new GPs? Enough of eye wash - Fight for full indemnity cover for all GPS or self destruct in shame.
