Still a trainee, Dr Sood is heading up an ‘NHS Digital Academy’ that will develop and train a new generation of digital leaders.

The London GP, a former advisor to NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens, will be in charge of creating 300 chief clinical information officers, chief information officers and aspirant digital leaders over the next three years.

The first cohort is due to start later this year – which is, he says, ‘an exciting moment and an important milestone for the NHS workforce development in informatics and digital health leadership’. It is also crucial to the health secretary’s aim for the NHS to go paperless by 2018.

His experience in IT grew after he completed a Masters in Public Health at Harvard and co-founded a start-up designed to improve paediatric adherence to asthma treatment.

Dr Sood also sits on the NHS Prevention Board and helped to design the Diabetes Prevention Programme for the NHS.

What others say ‘He is future-focused, has the ear of all the prime movers, and is supportive to other trainees trying to break through’
