MP committee launches enquiry into primary care

The House of Commons health committee is launching an inquiry into primary care which will include scrutiny of GP pay and workload.

The inquiry, launched today, will also look at issues including GP recruitment, patient access and the future models of general practice described in the Five Year Forward View.

Its scope includes:

  • The quality and standards of care for patients
  • Demand and access (including out-of-hours access and proposals for seven-day access)
  • Funding (including local and national distribution of resourcing)
  • Commissioning
  • Future models of care as piloted by the Five Year Forward View ‘vanguards’
  • Workforce: current and future challenges (including recruitment, retention, training, skill mix, contractual models, workload and pay).

Announcing the inquiry, which will take evidence in October and November, the committee said: ‘The Committee’s aim is to consider whether the Department of Health and its arms’ length bodies have the plans and policies in place now to ensure that high quality care is consistently available to patients at the point of need.’

The committee is asking that anyone with an interest in primary care submits a maximum of 3,000 words to the inquiry by 3 September.

  • We need to co-ordinate our response to this, and also to organise better than we've ever done before. Come and have your say at GPsurvival on facebook and twitter, and www.generalpracticesurvival.com

Enflated egos sitting around a table discussing a profession they have no clue about. Great. Nice coffee and cakes tho.'

    Completely agree!

This is how the NHS is run.

  • Be fair everyone! This might at last be a step forward to saving General Practice. Vent your spleen to the Parliamentary Committee with a copy to your LMC.

  • A small part, but why dont you look at what happens at the end of VTS? Not a single person in my ST3 group is on the performers list as an independent GP yet (we finished in 3 days) because our Area Team are so pathetic. Stupid system where you can't even apply for status to be changed until you received the paper copy of the CCT, then drive all the way to the central hub to hand it in, only for it to be photocopied and then scanned and sent to the person in charge by email, then wait a long time for them to bother to process it and send it out in the mail (if they've even bothered to keep your address updated when you tell them multiple times that you've moved house).

And its a wonder why practices can't recruit.
