RCGP elects new honorary treasurer to take over the role in 2016

The RCGP has elected Dr Steve Mowle as its new assistant honorary treasurer. He will work alongside current treasurer Dr Helen Stokes-Lampard, before taking full responsibility next year.

Dr Mowle, who was elected following a ballot of Council members, will assume the role on 19 November 2016 following successful appraisal, with the option to serve a full five-year term.

He is a practising GP in south London, and current chair of RCGP London, and has served in various college roles for 12 years, including a stint as Council vice-chair under Professor Clare Gerada from 2010 to 2013.

Dr Stokes-Lampard was tipped as a dark horse candidate for the next RCGP chair in this year’s Pulse Power 50, and she will step down as treasurer in November 2016 to ‘pursue other college opportunities’.

The Power 50 highlighted her achievements in convincing HM Revenue & Customs to agree that trainees can deduct the costs of their MRCGP exams from their tax bill, although the consequent increase in membership costs was labelled ‘unjustifiable’ by the BMA.

RCGP chief executive and returning officer Neil Hunt said: ‘We congratulate Steve on his election to the very important role of assistant honorary treasurer and look forward to working with him to build on Helen’s outstanding work. I know the college will benefit greatly from his in-depth knowledge and extensive experience.

’We also thank Helen for her dedicated service to the college thus far and wish her well in her next ventures.’

Of the 65 Council members eligible to vote, 55 took part. Two candidates stood for the role, with Dr Mowle receiving 39 votes and Dr Stuart Blake 16 votes from a turnout of over 84%.
