Obesity strategy ‘failing’, new diabetes hope and warning over ‘deadly pollen invasion’

The Government’s obesity strategy is doomed to failure according to a leading child health doctor because it is tackling the problem too late, reports the front page of The Times.

Professor Neena Modi – new president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health – has called for more focus on pregnant women and babies, to prevent children becoming overweight in the first place, the paper says.

People with diabetes could benefit from a new treatment for diabetic retinopathy, according to The Telegraph.

Scientists say their lab-based research shows drugs blocking the angiogenic factor VEGF could help to prevent progression of the disease.

Lastly, the Daily Express says French experts are warning that a currently rare form of ragweed pollen is set to cause havoc for UK hayfever sufferers in the future.

Apparently the ‘foreign ragweed’ is spreading from other areas of Europe and they predict levels could be four times higher than now by 2050.
