Sainsbury's is opening two new in-store GP surgeries, as the supermarket giant presses on with plans to expand its network of in-store clinics.
Today the supermarket giant opened a new in-store surgery in Bath and is also to run a full GP surgery on-site at a Newcastle-under-Lyme store.
The opening of the two surgeries takes the total number of Sainsburys in-store GP clinics to four. In-store GP clinics are already available at Sainsburys branches in Greater Manchester, and Lancashire.
The Newcastle-under-Lume branch currently houses a nurse-led clinic with prescriptions signed by doctors, according to Chemist and Druggist magazine. The Bath in-store surgery will be run by GPs at the Partners of Oldfield Surgery.
Dr Patrick Eavis, a GP partner at the practice, said: 'We are delighted to working with Sainsburys who have shown innovation and support for primary care across the country. Patient feedback has consistently highlighted a desire for general practice services to be made available at times and locations more convenient to their daily routines.'
Earlier this year, Pulse revealed that Sainsburys hoped to open eight in-store surgeries by the end of the summer. At the time, NHS North Linconshire's board had rejected an application by a practice in Scunthorpe to open a surgery in one of the supermarket's branches.
In November last year, Pulse revealed that the supermarket giant was offering premises free of charge to GP practices in a bid to expand its in-store surgeries network.
