This article will provide a primary care focused overview of how to manage patients with halitosis:

  • Taking a history and examining the oral cavity
  • Identifying possible causes, including, poor oral hygiene, necrotising ulcerative gingivitis, drug-related or salivary causes for example
  • Reassuring patients with psychogenic halitosis
  • Advising patients on good oral hygiene
  • Discussing prognosis with patients
