Dr Barry Lewis comes in at number 27 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. He has fallen nine places from last year’s list.

‘Very influential behind the scenes,’ is how one GP described Dr Barry Lewis, the chair of the Committee of GP Education Directors.

This year he will have to prove that influence as he deals with plans to force training practices to pay for the introduction of four-year training and Government pledges to boost the number of GP trainees.

The Government has already raised the prospect of GP trainers having to pay for the ‘benefit’ of having a trainee in their practice, and COGPED was influential in drawing up plans last year for fourth -year trainees to plug service gaps and staff out-of-hours.

Dr Lewis says a major challenge is all the negative press about GPs and training over the past year. He says ‘the almost constant anti-GP briefing that sets an atmosphere within which GPs start to brief against each other’ is a major disappointment for him, citing the controversy over the CSA and RCGP plans for a GP returner scheme as examples.
