40. Professor Martin Roland

Professor Martin Roland comes in at number 40 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50, up eight positions from last year’s Top 50 list.

Professor Martin Roland is a distinguished academic at the University of Cambridge and a part-time GP. He was one of the key architects of the QOF in 2004 and is an expert on the impact of performance-related incentives on patient care.

Praised by our panel for his ‘continuing work on the QOF’, Professor Roland has published a steady stream of papers this year, looking at the impact of the QOF on patient experience as well as evaluating the recently revamped GP patient survey.

He says this year he is working to acquire further grants for research into what he believes are ‘the really important issues for the NHS – understanding emergency admissions and evaluating the NHS reforms’.

Despite being a vocal critic of the Government’s ‘obsession’ with access and reforms, he still relishes his work as a GP and mentoring young academics – and says general practice ‘is a wonderful career, full of opportunities’.
