11. Professor Donald Berwick

International expert in patient safety

The report into patient safety by Professor Berwick, a big hitter in US health politics, has provided the basis for the Government’s ‘named-clinician’ proposals.

A former health advisor to the US president, he was invited by Prime Minister David Cameron to review NHS patient safety following the Francis report into the breakdown of care at Mid Staffordshire hospitals.

One of his key recommendations was that CCGs and NHS England should ensure there always was a named clinician, known to the patient, responsible for coordinating their care regardless of the setting.

That proposal - from a man whose father was a ‘horse and buggy GP’ in Conneticut - could yet come to shape UK general practice in the 21st century.
