15. Dr Mark Porter

During an assured first year in office, he has been a ‘safe pair of hands’ after the let-down of last year’s failed industrial action.

The BMA suspended plans to take further industrial action over the Government’s pension reforms after a crunch vote last July when it became clear that ‘only escalated action’ would prompt ministers to rethink the changes - which the BMA said it was ‘unwilling to do’ because of the impact on patients.

The subsequent return to the negotiating table let Dr Porter in for widespread criticism from more militant among the medical profession.

But since then, he has actively and vocally defended GPs over out-of-hours, fought NHS England for more funds for general practice and has recently been trying to persuade Labour to avoid yet another NHS reorganisation should it win the next general election.
