Creating an extra million medical school places will translate into one extra full-time GP, admits think tank

Through the K-hole

A think tank (which has done an extraordinary amount of thinking over the years) has concluded that providing a million places at medical school will create at least one extra full time GP.

‘We’ve run the numbers,’ said the think tank, ‘and in the current climate, what with increasing work-load, falling pay, spiralling indemnity costs and natural attrition, we predict that if we can train a million extra doctors at least one of them will become a full time GP partner.’

A Croydon based GP who has just entered a full time partnership said: ‘When I was at medical school and we were asked what we wanted to do I said that being a GP was my second choice.

‘My first choice was doing anything else.'

  • When you are on the topic of Think-tanks... can you give us your analysis of the 'TaxPayersAllliance' ?... they state that the NHS doesn't need extra funding, that we are inefficient and not productive... and that tax cuts, subsidised by decreased funding and better administration are the way forward in the NHS, likely with selling off some assets to the private sector.... and oh they are sponsored by????? Who are they sponsored by???? mmmh doesnt say it on their very impressive website with all their 'advisors'

  • Holly ***. This is almost as genius as the formula you developed about solving the primary care crisis: 1+1=3

  • @MacDonalds's Medicine
TaxPayers Alliance are probably an offshoot of a right wing bunch of narcissistic xenophobes also known as the Conservative Party.
To be fair there are left wing think tanks as well, and my main gripe with the media is how all these think tanks are presented as some sort of 'experts' without any sort of indication as to who they are and what their conflicts of interests might be.

  • In NHS Scotland we are told to "THINK frailty", "THINK delirium", "THINK dementia" by the Think Tank that is Healthcare Improvement Scotland (capitals not mine)

All this thinking is related to specialising sub-dividing. Generalism loses out.

I would suggest that an extra million medical school places will create an extra million specialists!

It is time that we had a renaissance of generalists!

Sadly "THINK tanks" are in their own "SILOS" and a tank cannot even think!
