HIV specialists report GUM clinics being put out to tender

Nearly half of HIV specialists report their GUM clinic has already been put out to tender, or is due to be shortly, shows a new survey.

A survey of 100 members of the British HIV Association (BHIVA) in England, reveals 30% said their GUM service will be tendered in the future, 10% had already been tendered and 7% were currently in the process of being tendered.

A third said they believed that the Government’s NHS reforms have been detrimental to HIV services and two-thirds said HIV care will decline in the future due to the changes.

BHIVA Chair Dr David Asboe said the results showed the extent of the threat to sexual health services.

He said: ‘As a direct result there are HIV services being threatened with closure without adequate care arrangements made for the people living with HIV attending these services.’
