GPs should have the power to sack CCG boards if a majority of their practices support such action, LMCs have voted.
Representatives at the annual LMCs Conference in Liverpool backed a motion calling for GPs and LMCs to have a stronger role in overseeing CCGs.
The motion said CCGs must be constituted in a way so that their boards 'may be recalled should a majority of member practices support such action'.
GP leaders overwhelmingly backed separate strands of the motion calling for GP members to be elected by processes 'open to all GPs regardless of their contractual status', 'endorsed by the LMC', and for GPs on CCG boards to be elected by 'one GP one vote'.
Dr John Grenville, secretary of Derbyshire LMC, proposing the motion, said: 'This is going to impact upon us and patients. We need to be able hold them to account.'
GPs speaking in favour of the motion included Dr Fiona Armstrong, member of Kent LMC and chair of Swale CCG. Dr Armstrong said: 'It is vital that the LMC is involved in the process. In our area, we have open, fair, transparent, processes.'
Dr Penelope Jarrett, member of Lewisham LMC, also backed the motion, saying: 'We need to keep all of our colleagues involved at every level.'
