Letter from RCGP chief executive regarding council chair elections

Dear Council Members

I know you will have been anticipating hustings and a ballot for the Chair- Elect position following the February Council meeting.

I write as College Returning Officer. I need to advise you that one candidate did not satisfy the specified requirements for achieving formal nomination. I have  therefore determined that candidate ineligible to stand for election, and following due process and an appeal to the Nominations Committee (which has formal jurisdiction in this matter),  I have to report that my decision has been upheld.

This means there is now no need for hustings, nor for a ballot of Council Members, as the sole remaining valid candidate is now deemed elected unopposed.

This action, and the background process as just detailed, has been confirmed by the College’s Constitutional lawyer as the proper and appropriate way of proceeding, and in accordance with the College’s Byelaws and governance structure.

I have pleasure therefore in advising Council that the Chair-Elect is Dr Maureen Baker, and I congratulate her on her successful election.

Dr Baker will take up the role of Chair-Elect following the Council meeting on 15 June until the November Council meeting , when she will formally become the new Chair of College Council.

The Hon Secretary will be happy to answer any further questions you may have on the matter.

Neil Hunt

Chief Executive
