Practices urged ‘no half-days’

By Gareth Iacobucci

Practices have been urged not to close for half-days in a bid to provide better access to patients, following a motion passed at the Welsh LMCs' annual conference.

Delegates backed calls for GP practices who currently close for half-days to reconsider their opening hours, to offer: ‘a doors-open policy for almost all of the GMS contracted hours of 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday'.

Despite the Government's extended hours drive, some GP practices around the UK continue choose to close for half-days at their own discretion.

However, a separate strand of the motion, also passed, said patients should have ‘reasonable access' to GMS services, and that: ‘Practices should provide this by not having a half day closure.'
