By Ian Quinn

The RCGP has opted to added some steel to its organisation, electing two new vice chairs who are both GPs from Sheffield.

Dr Janet Hall and Professor Nigel Mathers are the first RCGP vice chairs to be elected by the council, with previous GPs in the role having been appointed by the incoming chair.

Dr Hall, a full-time GP with special interests including cardiology and diabetes, will take on responsiblity for patient liaison and lead the planning of future RCGP conferences.

Professor Mathers, an academic GP who is professor of primary care at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Sheffield University, will work with the RCGP leadership on steering policy and communications.

Their new roles take effect from 20 November when chair-elect Dr Clare Gerada takes over from Professor Steve Field in the RCGP chair's hot seat.
