Vautrey is picked again for GPC deputy chair

Leeds GP Dr Richard Vautrey is set to stay in the role as deputy chair of the GPC, after being confirmed in the role by new chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul.

Dr Vautrey was the runner-up in the final round of voting at the GPC’s election of a new chair last week. He has already been in the deputy role for six years, supporting Dr Laurence Buckman.

North London GP Dr Nagpaul was finally elected as the winning candidate to replace the outgoing chair last Thursday after a heavily contested election.

Commenting on the choice of Dr Vautrey as deputy, Dr Nagpaul said: ‘Richard has considerable experience and capability, and I believe he will be well-positioned to provide me with excellent support in my role as chairman.’

Last week’s GPC meeting also saw the re-election of Dr Peter Holden and the reinstatement of Dr Beth McCarron-Nash, who had previously lost her seat on the negotiating team last year. Dr Dean Marshall, whose post was not up for re-election last week, is the fifth member of the negotiating team, who alongside the chairs of GPC Scotland, GPC Wales and GPC Northern Ireland represent GPs across the UK in contract talks.

Clinching the chair role, Dr Nagpaul also saw off competition from fellow negotiator Dr Marshall, who is the former chair of the Scottish GPC, as well as a joint-ticket candidacy from former LMCs conference chair Dr Fay Wilson and Londonwide LMCs chief executive Dr Michelle Drage.
