GP practices have 700,000 more patients registered for care in June 2017 than they did 11 months previously, official NHS England figures reveal.
The latest report on ‘Number of patients registered at a GP practice’ produced by NHS Digital sets out that there were 58,437,363 patients registered with a GP practice as of 1 June 2017.
This is a 692,549 increase from the 58 million patients registered with a GP in July 2016, and 73,000 more than were registered just a month before, in May 2017.
In April 2013, the earliest date these figures were available in this format, there were around 56 million registered patients.
This comes as outgoing chair of the BMA Dr Mark Porter highlighted today that GPs are delivering more patient consultations than ever.
He told the BMA’s Annual Representative Meeting that GPs are ‘dealing with tens of millions more appointments than they did a decade ago’ – but with ‘a smaller share of NHS funding’.
