10 – Dr William Pickles

Dr William Pickles was the first president of the RCGP in 1953, but first came to the public’s attention in 1939 with the publication of Epidemiology in a Country Practice – a medical classic that established his reputation as one of the world’s leading epidemiologists.

Dr Pickles received many honours for services to medicine but remained a country doctor at his practice at Wensleydale, north Yorkshire, until 1964.
