10 steps in bidding for a service (1 CPD hour)



Dr Peter Smith explains how practices can bid to be providers of new services – under full tenders or ‘any willing provider’

Learning objectives


This module gives advice on bidding to run a new service, covering:

  • Knowing your tender
  • Assessing your practice’s capabilities
  • Entering an expression of interest (EOI)
  • Gathering local data and understanding the service you will be offering
  • Working out your staffing requirements
  • Preparing your final bid
  • Preparing for interview

After reading this article you will be asked to record your learning points and some action points to earn a suggested 1 CPD credit. Below are some suggested questions to reflect on as you work through the module:

  1. Do you know your tender?
  2. How long is the contract for?
  3. Do you understand of the service provision and the area in which you will have to operate?
  4. Have you calculated your expenses?
  5. Do you understand how to prepare your own ‘mobilisation plan’?

This module was first published on 8th March 2011 and was up to date with all key guidelines and evidence at that point. It will be reviewed as part of our routine update cycle by 8th March 2013 but will be updated sooner to reflect any key guideline changes.
