1100: Dealing with addiction

Three of Jobbing Doctor's six patients so far have been drug addicts.

My excellent practice nurse is getting a patient ready for me to remove a mole. This takes a few minutes, and that allows me to update my diary.

This morning is a typical Monday morning. All of the patients, so far, are chronic cases, and three of the six I have seen so far are drug addicts that are having supervised prescriptions from me.

This is a significant part of my workload, and although we have a really good service for drug dependent people, it still spills out into my daily work.

Establishing them on a regular prescription and supporting people with addiction problems is time-consuming and requires a great deal of patience. But if you are able to establish a good plan with them, and they stick to it, you can generally tell if they are sticking to the ‘grand plan'. There is a ‘look' to people who are using heroin or cocaine: I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but it is in the eyes.

All three are doing well, and this is really good.

This is one of the many issues that we deal with.
