An old-fashioned left-winger politically, Dr Peedell is a consultant clinical oncologist at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
As a member of the BMA Council and the BMA Political Board, his was a vocal presence at the association's recent Special Representative Meeting, where he spoke out passionately and eloquently against Andrew Lansley's NHS reforms.
He is also co-chair of the NHS Consultants' Association (NHSCA), where he has helped table a huge petition against his reforms, to date collecting a hefty 250,000 signatures.
