Despite being in the grips of burnout, Dr Zoe Norris penned her first blog for The Huffington Post last Christmas. The response was sensational – the piece got over 30,000 likes on Facebook and was one of the most read on the website in the year, despite being posted only a few weeks before the end of December. And Dr Norris has continued to inform and engage both GPs and the public with blogs that have valiantly drawn long overdue attention to the GP recruitment crisis, as well as providing a candid account of GP burnout.

‘Suddenly I was getting emails to my NHS account and my work from colleagues across the country – from clinicians, trainees and practice managers. I realised I wasn’t alone in feeling frustrated and sad at what was happening to general practice,’ she says.

The GP, who practises in Hull, has also become a familiar face on our television screens, representing the profession on a Newsnight election special. ‘Coming into the green room to be told that Mr Hunt’s adviser was not happy with my contribution made me feel a certain smug satisfaction,’ she says.

Dr Norris has recently become media lead for the new GP pressure group GP Survival and regular readers may have noticed that she has begun writing for Pulse – not bad for someone who only qualified in 2007.

‘I’m looking forward reaching some new colleagues with my writing and hopefully being well received,’ she says. On her past record, there is no doubt about that.
