This grandee of the profession could be forgiven for taking it easy after standing down as deputy BMA chair.

But the former Cheshire GP does not have a slow gear. He is on the GP advisory panel for ‘DevoManc’, the radical plan to give Greater Manchester control over its health budget. And this year, if former Labour health secretary Andy Burnham wins his bid to become mayor of Greater Manchester, Dr Chand will have a major role in forming his health policy.

His nominators are united in their view of Dr Chand as a role model. As one put it: ‘He is taken seriously at the highest level and respected by coalface GPs.’ Another said that his ‘incessant campaigning for the NHS and general practice, and the vast number of opinion articles he has written for both the trade and national press on GP matters’ meant Dr Chaand deserved to be in the Power 50.

His experience as a former PCT boss means he is trusted by NHS managers as well as by his GP colleagues; NHS chief executive Simon Stevens invited him in to discuss the crisis in general practice before the publication of the GP Forward View.

Interesting fact: Played cricket to the equivalent of county level in India and counts former India captain Kapil Dev as a close friend
