Nominated by a number of GPs from the capital on our panel, Dr Kambiz Boomla, a GP in Tower Hamlets, east London, is well known for being a politically active left-winger – and this year has been no exception.
In November, he supported staff members on strike over cuts to their NHS pensions, and when GPs took action on 21 June, he not only participated but also leafleted the local hospital and organised a lunchtime rally in Whitechapel.
When the pilots abolishing GP practice boundaries launched in Tower Hamlets, he was a vocal critic of the impact it would have on the deprived area in which he practices.
He also joined Pulse as a blogger, covering topics from the link between privatisation and pensions cuts, to the public health legacy of the Olympics.
Dr Boomla has just gone part-time at his practice in Limehouse and has recently stepped down as chair of East London LMC. He hopes his extra time will help him raise support for events such as the ‘anti-austerity' march in October. He will also be supporting the campaign against pension cuts through the newly revived Tower Hamlets branch of the BMA.
