6. Professor Malcolm Grant

He has largely kept out of the headlines following his GP golf jibe last year, but he was first to announce a ‘fundamental’ review of the GP contract.

He listed how to incentivise medium term outcomes in primary care among the three top level priorities for NHS England in the coming year alongside addressing the rising pressure on A&E departments and mortality rates at certain hospitals.

Professor Grant said that he was not in favour of redrawing the contract for GPs to take back out-of-hours care but made it clear that major changes to the GP contract were needed now to prevent ‘a battle every year’.

GPs should not expect a pushover, but there might be some laughs. Professor Grant is a qualified barrister and academic lawyer with wide experience of public service - unlike Basil Fawlty (with whom he was compared last year after a succession of gaffes).
